Hamburger Chow Mein

This recipe appeared on the Carolina® Rice package in 1980.

    1 cup Mahatma® White Rice
    1 lb ground beef
    1 cup water
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp ground black pepper
    1 onion, thinly sliced
    1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
    1 each minced garlic
    2 pkgs powdered instant beef-flavored broth mix
    4 tsps cornstarch
    1/2 tsp sugar
    1/2 tsp ground ginger
    3 Tbsps soy sauce
    2 Tbsps sherry, optional
    1 pkg (3.5 oz.) chow mein noodles
  • Directions
    Prepare rice according to package directions. In a large skillet, brown ground beef until done. Drain off excess fat. Add 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer 5 minutes. Stir in onion, green bell pepper, and garlic; simmer with meat about 5-minutes. Combine instant beef broth, cornstarch, sugar, ginger and remaining 1/2 cup water, soy sauce, and sherry. Blend into meat mixture and heat until thickened and shiny. Serve over hot, cooked rice and chow mein noodles.
